ACDSee32 from ACDSYS
This review covers ACDSee32 from ACDSYS.
One piece of software that used to be fairly uncommon, and much sought after, was a good image viewer. What people wanted was something that did a good, and quick, job of decoding JPEG images. One of the first Windows contenders, and still the best, IMHO, is ACDSee (see figure 5.1).

ACDSee32 version 2.11b from ACDSYS is, and was even in its early days, a great image viewer for Windows based systems. If there was a "Best Upgrade" award for 1997 it would have to go to ACDSee32.
Already a hard-working, stable program when it first came out, the latest version has some great extras. Aside from slide shows of your images you can get thumbnail views of all of the images in any directory including those on a network drive. I don't know about you, but I have hundreds of images stored across 4 or 5 Gigabytes of drive space. ACDSee32 helps me locate images quickly and, with its thumbnail browser, visually. As an artist this is a major plus for me.
Another big selling point, in my opinion, is that ACDSee32 now displays native Photoshop (.PSD) files. This too is a great help. I no longer have to have both a .PSD version of every file I create as well as another version that I can view with an image browser. I can quickly find Photoshop files in any of my directories.
As well, ACDSee32 has a very intuitive, easy-to-use interface that makes moving, copying, and renaming files a painless process.
If you have a growing collection of images that you need to keep track of and view, then ACDSee32 is worth a look. If you're like me you'll find that you'll be putting a shortcut to it on your desktop soon after placing this great program on your hard drive.
Some of my favorite options and features:
- Thumbnail viewing of your images
- Very fast decompression (it also reads ahead/back depending on how you're selecting files)
- It displays .PSD files
- Slide show capabilities
You don't have to take my word for it, though, you can download a free demo of the latest version here from ACDSYS!
That's it for now... Be sure to check out some of our other Rave-views!
